My Skincare Routine

November 03, 2016

Makeup has been a huge passion of mine throughout my life, but over the past few years, I have been enjoying skin care more. I’ve definitely had my ups and downs with my skin, especially in high school and my freshman year of college (thank you stress and anxiety). I never really had a routine until I started going to the dermatologist. Once I started seeing results after my first year, I started taking my skin care routine more seriously. I use products from the dermatologist, like my cleanser and topical, but I really took the time to research what other products will be the most suitable for my skin. I have combination skin and it is also sensitive, so it took me awhile to find products that were just right for me.  I wash my face every morning and night and I never skip my routine. No matter how late at night it is, I have to do my routine. Being a senior in college, life can be pretty crazy and sometimes I don’t have the opportunity during the day to just sit down and breathe.  I view my morning and night time routine as my “me time”. This is my way of taking a few minutes out of my day to not worry or stress about all the projects and assignments I have going on in my life. It definitely helps me wind down at the end of the day as well.

My morning routine is pretty simple. I don’t like to use a lot of heavy products because I do tend to get oily and I want my makeup to last all day.

Cleanser: My cleanser is from the dermatologist, but I recommend using whatever works for your skin type.

Ole Henriksen-Nurture Me Moisturizer ($40): I have been using this moisturizer for about a year now and it definitely has made a huge difference to my skin. It is very hydrating but it caters to sensitive skin. Ingredients include wheat germ oil, primrose oil, chamomile extract, and vitamins A, C & K.  These ingredients help soothe, nourish, protect and regenerate the skin.

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream ($30): I really like this eye cream because it isn’t too heavy under my eyes and it brightens while reducing puffiness. The main ingredients are coffee beans and ginseng which help with anti-aging and brightening.

My nighttime routine is pretty similar, I use the same cleanser, eye cream and moisturizer, but a few more products are added:

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water ($6.29): Before I cleanse my face, I like to take off my makeup with a cleansing water just to make sure all of my makeup is completely gone. I really like this one because it doesn’t dry out or irritate my skin.

Vasanti Brighten Up ($34): I use this exfoliator about 2 times a week.  It really does a great job at removing dry skin without being irritating.

Topical: If I do get an occasional breakout, I will use one prescribed by my dermatologist.

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate ($46): I was a little nervous about adding a facial oil to my routine, but every beauty blogger raves about this concentrate and I really wanted to try it. I truly believe that this is the one product that makes a difference in my skin. It has helped smooth it and my acne scars have faded. The main ingredients are evening primrose oil, lavender essential oil, and squalane. This product helps  regenerate, restore, and replenish the skin. I tend to apply this before my moisturizer for better results.

First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist ($16): As a final step in my routine, I will spray this mist for extra hydration if my skin seems dry. It is very nice and refreshing on the skin. The main vitamins in this product are; vitamin B5, vitamin E, and vitamin C. You can also use this spray to set your makeup!

I have been told by my mother to always take care of my skin and I am starting to realize that developing a routine now will truly make a difference later in life. Now, most of these products are on the pricier side, but a little goes a long way.  I believe that skin care products are an investment. If you are going to splurge on any type of beauty products, it should be skin care.
